1 Day Tour - Oban & Kilmartin Glen Standing Stones

1 Day Tour - Oban & Kilmartin Glen Standing Stones

Our journey takes us to the conservation village of Luss nestling on the shores of Loch Lomond, records show there’s been a settlement here since the 13th century but in more recent times the village was rebuilt by the clan Colquhoun to house workers for the nearby slate quarries. Take a stroll through the village and onto the pier and marvel at the stunning views of the Loch and Ben Lomond dominating the skyline.

From Luss we leave the low-lands and drive north to the highlands where the scenery takes in a more rugged landscape. Passing through the busy village of Tyndrum our journey takes us along Glen Orchy to our next stop of the day, Kilchurn Castle. Situated at the head of Loch Awe this 15th century ruins was once a clan Campbell stronghold and is one of thee most photographed castles in Scotland. There is a rough path leading up to the Castle where you can climb the highest tower which offers magnificent views down the length of Loch Awe.

From Kilchurn we make a short drive to St Conan’s Kirk, and is one of the highlights in Argyll. Built by Walter Campbell in 1907 the Kirk began worship in 1930. As you walk through the Kirk you’ll come across some unusual gargoyles and metal dogs staring down from the guttering, there’s also a life-size effigy of Robert the Bruce (King of Scotland) carved in wood with the Kings Face and hands in white alabaster. Beneath the effigy is a chamber containing a bone from the Bruce, brought from Dunfermline Abbey.

Leaving Loch Awe we head for the busy harbour town of Oban (gateway to the Isles) where we stop for lunch and an opportunity to browse round Oban's many gift shops or take a tour around the local whisky distillery.

Refreshed after lunch we leave Oban and head for Kilmartin Glen, famous for its burial cairns, rock carvings, and standing stones. A good starting point to explore the glen is from the museum where you get an informative history of the glen. A short drive from the museum is the rocky outcrop of Dunadd and is a very important part of Scotland’s history. It was here that Kings were anointed and which was then the Kingdom of Dalriada in AD500.

From Dunadd we drive south to the picturesque town of Inveraray, set on the shores of Loch Fyne the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell has his seat here at Inveraray Castle. You can take a tour of this imposing 17th century Castle housing magnificent fine arts and antiquities, there’s also the excellent Inveraray Jail which is now a museum or if you wish just take a walk around the gift shops or relax with a coffee and take in the atmosphere. Leaving Inveraray our journey takes us along the shores of Loch Fyne and a short stop at the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint for some memorable photos for your album. From here we head home via Loch Lomond and your accommodation.
